There are lots of
uses for cordless microphones. They’re handy for MC’s, DJ’s,
singers, performers and public speakers of all types. But whether you’re
looking for a cordless headset microphone to teach a yoga class or a really
top-shelf cordless karaoke microphone there are some important factors
to consider.
- Frequency
Range: The whole point of a cordless microphone is freedom; so knowing
exactly how far you can travel without signal loss is essential.
- Frequency Type: UHF, VHF or Gigahertz?
- UHF: Fixed frequency
UHF is the choice of most professionals.
- VHF: This is
cheaper and works just fine in most situations.
- Gigahertz: The
digital frequency used most often in phones.
- Pick-up Pattern: Cardioid Microphones are directional, and block sound from the rear
(and sided in a super-cardioids), while omni-directionals pick up all
sides.
- Type: Traditional
hand held microphones are the most reliable and versatile, but when
hands-free is a necessity there are headsets and clip-on (lavaliere)
models.
- Batteries: Light,
long-lasting batteries are the ideal (at least 10 hours); it’s
always handy to have a battery level indicator as well.
Off all the brand
names for cordless microphones Shure comes out on top, and particularly
among cordless headset microphones Shure is the leader of the pack. Other
reliable brands include Sony, Sennheiser and Samson.
